Picking the brains of the brilliant: Nick Cocozza

Interview 2:

NICK COCOZZA (nickcocozza.blogspot.com)

Dundee illustrator and street artist, Design student, wicked cool-cat

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Mostly my surroundings, things that I see, hear, smell,

the urban environment in general and the people within it really inspire my work as a whole.

Describe your style in 3 words.
Humorous, colourful, contemporary.

What was the artistic environment you grew up in like? Did it influence you at all?
I always used to love drawing when I was younger. At primary school
I would draw pictures of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck and give them to girls that I liked ha ha. When I look through all the old work that I done when I was a kid it does kind of influence me though, there’s something about the simplicity of kids drawings that are just amazing.

What’s the first thing you do when given a new brief?

Research, its really important for me to know every aspect of the brief so that I can generate an idea that’s

worthwhile. I usually take notes in my sketchbook, draw out some rough concepts etc.. Then when I find one that fits, I just build on it.

If you could be one superhero, who would it be?
I’m not sure if they are superheroes as such but I was absolutely obsessed with teenage mutant hero turtles when I was younger.

I always wanted to be Donatello.

Your most loathed colour?
Probably that horrible orangey brown, I don’t use it very often.

Any tips for designers-in-training?
Don’t compete, collaborate. Get your work out their, be confident in what you do and most importantly…enjoy it

It will show through your work.

Famous last words...
You get out what you put in. One of those things your teachers and parents drill into you from an early age but its very true.
