Picking the brains of the brilliant: Anita (Freedom Daisy Sunshine) Ibell

Interview 4:

ANITA (FREEDOM DAISY SUNSHINE) IBELL

Events Management student, multi-talented artist, one of my most favourite people. Ever.

Hi Anita, how are you today?

Hi Marie, I'm splendid. I've had a bit much caffiene, which I tried to counteract with some orange juice, to no avail. Now I sit at my desk with my heart racing and my toes tapping.. aahhh... Full-scale coffee addiction.

Tell us a little bit about your illustration.

My illustration is really just what happens when I am in a situation where I have a pen and paper, random ideas pop into my head and I have enough time to develop them. My favourite thing to draw with is black pen and I like to draw on surfaces like paper bags or excercise books. I don't often use much colour but I've recently discovered the magic of felt tips! Collage is definately something I'd like to explore more, as is everything Typography! I'm a bit of a computer retard, everything I do is just basic and done by hand.

For as long as I can remember, you have always kept yourself busy with painting, or drawing or craft. What have you been doing in your spare time lately?

I've been super busy lately! So the spare time I have had has been spent sleeping, adventuring with my friends, cooking soups and researching my latest obsession- everything '60s. Unfortunately 'cause of that, drawing has been restricted to vague notebook doodles. But I find that even these nonsense drawings help to quell my creative urges. When I don't draw or make stuff for periods of time I go crazy and the headings in my work notebooks get increasingly decorative. I feel sorry for my boyfriend when that's the case!

You're studying events management at AUT and are doing work experience at Cassette 9 on Vulcan Lane. So tell me about these totally fantastic markets you've been organising at Cassette I've been hearing about.

The markets are so much fun! My job is to organise all the people involved and make sure that everyone is where they should be and having fun, so that the day goes well. The reason I love it so much is 'cause I get to be surrounded by so many creative and inspiring people in such a  vibrant atmosphere. The free beer is pretty nice as well.. The markets run from 12-5 every Saturday, upstairs at 9 Vulcan Lane.

Your work is kooky, detailed and delightful. Where do you draw inspiration from?

Those are lovely adjectives!! Thank you. I'm quite erratic and go through stages with my inspiration. I can be inspired by a general thought, gestures and other quirks, mouths, pictures in magazines, being around my crazy and delightful flatmates and birds and animals are also a big inspiration! I have a collection of birds at home that always manages to creep people out... I try not to force anything or adhere to particular rules 'cause it stumps my creativity and makes me think too much! The key for me is to keep it simple... and spontaneous.

If you were stuck on an island with 3 people (fact or fictional), who would you choose?

I hate this question. Nobody ever comes to mind.. Not that I can't think of anybody.. I think of too many people and can't choose!!

Your work was recently in the 'Presence' zine. Would you ever consider selling your work commercially?

Although I like my work to be spontaneous, there's nothing like a good project to spur me on! If someone was to like my work enough to buy it, or commission anything I'd definitely say yes.

Do you plan to incorporate your artsy side into your events management career? If so, how?

I hope so. Like I said before, if I dont do anything creative for a while I feel a bit strange. The reason I'm chasing events management as a career is 'cause, as I see it, it combines all my interests (or at least has the potential to!) Ideally, I'd like to get into anything to do with music, exhibitions, festivals... even craft markets like what I'm doing at Cassette. I've tried a few things before at uni (Visual Arts, Arts...) and both stopped me from doing other things I love! I'm glad Event Management gives me scope to try lots of different things.

If you could be one superhero, who would you be?

One that could fly. And had super vision, then I'd never have to wear glasses again....

Famous last words..

Bhudda was wise, he said "All I am is a result of what I have thought"
